What is the difference between THC and CBD?

The hemp plant, domesticated 6,000 years ago in China, produces over 400 organic compounds. Terpenes and cannabinoids are the two main groups of molecules with bioactive properties present in hemp.

Cannabinoids can influence the functioning of the human nervous system; the hemp plant biosynthesizes more than sixty of them. THC, CBD and CBG are the main cannabinoids and they all differ in their chemical structure and action.

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of the most abundant cannabinoids in hemp. CBD is currently being studied to better understand its therapeutic and other applications. This cannabinoid is known to have medicinal and relaxing properties without the psychoactive effects of its better-known cousin, THC.

Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is the molecule responsible for the main psychoactive effects of cannabis. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), THC’s action is similar to that of the cannabinoids produced naturally by our bodies within the endocannabinoid system.

Cannabinoid receptors are concentrated in certain parts of the brain associated with thinking, memory, pleasure, coordination, and the perception of time. THC binds to these receptors and activates them, affecting a person’s memory, pleasure, movement, thinking, concentration, coordination, and perception of time.

THC is one of several chemical compounds found in the resin secreted by the cannabis plant. Most of these glands are found around the plant’s reproductive organs, the flowers. Other compounds specific to cannabis, cannabinoids, are present in this resin. One of these cannabinoids, cannabidiol or CBD, is non-psychoactive and acts in cooperation with THC.

CBD :
Non-psychoactive: does not produce a high.
No known side effects.
Known for its ability to counterbalance the psychoactive effects of THC.

THC :
Psychoactive: produces a high.
Side effects: paranoia or anxiety.
Effects consistent with psychosis.
